I have just finished Season 1 of The Capture, and I have a problem. I no longer trust television. I no longer trust CCTV. I no longer trust video evidence. And, frankly, I'm beginning to look suspiciously at my own reflection in the bathroom mirror. This is what happens when you watch six episodes of a British thriller that takes the innocent little idea of "seeing is believing" and drives a tank through it. I started watching The Capture because I wanted a good thriller. Something with a bit of action, a few twists and preferably without twelve episodes of people staring meaningfully out of windows before anything actually happens. And bloody hell, did I get it. The story revolves around CCTV footage, surveillance, manipulation and something that becomes increasingly terrifying: the possibility that what you're seeing isn't necessarily what actually happened. I didn’t binge-watch Guilt . That would imply some sort of lack of self-control. What actually happened is that I watched one episode, thought, “That was rather good,” and then somehow found myself watching another. And another. And before long I was sufficiently invested in the lives of a collection of deeply questionable people who appear to have made bad decisions their full-time profession. Guilt is a Scottish black comedy, although calling it simply a “black comedy” feels a bit inadequate. It is dark, funny, uncomfortable, twisted and, at times, completely bloody bonkers. And I mean that as a compliment. The basic premise involves two brothers whose lives take a spectacular turn for the worse after a rather unfortunate incident.
