Tesla Model 3 Charged with a Portable Fuel Generator: The Internet Has a Field Day

Picture this: a Tesla Model 3 being charged by a portable fuel generator. Yes, you read that right. And as you might imagine, the internet wasted no time in turning it into a veritable circus.

Now, we all know that range anxiety is the ever-present bogeyman for electric vehicle owners. It’s that nagging fear that your battery will conk out just as you’re farthest from a charging station. And in some cases, this fear becomes so all-consuming that it drives people to rather drastic measures—like strapping a generator to the back of their sleek, silent, eco-friendly machine.

Take, for instance, this chap in China. He’s clearly decided that the possibility of being stranded is far worse than the absurdity of lugging around a portable generator. So, he’s kitted out his Tesla Model 3 with a mount to carry the thing, just in case the battery starts getting a bit peckish. And let’s be honest, with this blistering heat, the air conditioning in these electric cars devours miles like they’re going out of fashion.

The video, predictably, went viral. It shows the generator chugging away, merrily feeding juice into the Tesla while it sits in a queue on a mountain pass, waiting to resume its journey. Whether this was just a bit of a joke is up for debate because, let’s face it, that dinky generator wouldn’t get you more than a few dozen miles, let alone the hundreds you’d need to actually get anywhere useful.

Naturally, the video has ignited quite a debate online. On one side, you've got the usual crowd taking the mickey out of electric cars, while on the other, some more skeptical folks are questioning the whole thing's authenticity. There’s always the chance it’s a bit of staged internet bait, crafted to stoke the fires of online argument.

In response to this kind of anxiety, Tesla is working on a Range Extender for its upcoming electric pickup, the Cybertruck, set to launch in 2025. But don’t get too excited just yet—this add-on is set to cost a whopping $16,000, and it’ll only give you an extra 200-odd kilometres of range. Oh, and it’ll eat up a chunk of your truck bed, so you’ll have even less space for whatever it is you Cybertruck drivers haul around.

In the end, this is just another chapter in the ongoing saga of our transition to electric vehicles. Whether this video is a clever bit of satire or a genuine glimpse into the lengths some will go to avoid being stranded, it certainly has everyone talking.
