EU Legislation Sparks Excitement for Messaging Upgrades on iPhone and Android

Get ready for a potential messaging revolution! New EU legislation could transform the way our favorite smartphones operate, benefiting both iPhone and Android users alike.

Apple, in particular, has been caught in a series of battles with the EU regarding proposed changes to rules surrounding technological devices. This has already led to the upcoming switch to USB-C, expected to feature on the iPhone 15 range later this year.

Among the wide range of changes outlined, one particular aspect caught my attention: messaging standards. The EU report emphasizes that platforms offering messaging services should be able to interact with each other. This appears to be a response to Apple's reluctance to adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard, which has become common on Android phones.

However, this legislation could go even further. It suggests that different messaging platforms should be able to communicate with each other, regardless of the recipient's choice of app. Imagine being able to message someone on Telegram while they prefer using WhatsApp. This interoperability could be a game-changer.

Currently, when a new messaging platform launches, users flock to it but quickly become disenchanted when they can't connect with the people they want to message. This legislation aims to change that. You could use Telegram or another preferred app, seamlessly communicating with others using their platform of choice. It would bridge the gap and create a unified messaging experience, irrespective of the app being used.

Of course, the implementation of this change won't happen overnight. The legislation includes a provision for security concerns to be raised as an argument against its implementation. So, we can expect further discussions and debates before any definitive action is taken.

Exciting times lie ahead for messaging standards, with the potential for greater connectivity and convenience on the horizon. Stay tuned for updates as this legislation progresses.
