Equus By Unifaun Theatre- Dare you defy your own gods?

Image
Lately I had the opportunity to go and see the representations of Equus at St. James Cavalier, by a theatre company I have never heard before called Unifaun Theater. It was fantastic for several reasons! I had to "strongly encourage" my date to come along, she is young and not much into these sort of shows but even thou it is not her usual cup of tea (excuse my pun) I could see in her eyes that she has enjoyed every minute of it. Equus is not easy (I don’t even know how to pronounce it right:)). It is a kind of psychological detective story, a play which does an unusual thing. It asks why? Most plays tell us how. Equus is a psychological inquiry into a crime, a journey into someone's mind. It is a kind of highbrow suspense story, a psychic and mythic thriller, but also an essay in character and motive. It is the documentation of a crime. The story has been based on a flimsily documented but apparently true incident of a young stable hand has attacked six horses in their s

ZOO goes TV

'Minghajr Flus, minghajr flus ghalxejn jiprova jaqbadni l-gharus ghax minghajr flus, minghajr flus la tghannaq u l-anqas tbus' these are some of the lyrics from the latest version of ‘On again Off again’ of Julie and Ludwig as interpreted in maltese by the crew of Zoo, which yesterday I had the chance to watch it being sung at the MCC theater in Ta’Qali. Julie and Ludwig where not the only famous people who where victimized, but even the people watching the show were brought up on stage and been called names. The gang of zoo even had fun taking the piss and mistreating them or throwing them out of the theatre without any reason. Putting aside that the show started 20 minutes late, the large amount of adverts that make you feel like you are not in a theatre but in front of a TV watching some local channels, an uncomfortable seat that was not even big enough for a child to fit in and that some of the gigs were very vulgar and I don’t find vulgar words or vulgar gestures funny, I

London’s West End alone boasts more than twenty musical which are currently being staged so that makes it impossible physically and financially to lap all of them in one holiday so I looked forward to the 5th visit of the quartet who perform under the name of Beyond the Barricade whom have become famous by singing out fabulous tunes from the most famous musicals. The famous group returned to Malta to perform their shows during last weekend, thanks to Masquerade Theatre Company. I rave over anything that it is staged live as long as it is made from the heart but I have a special soft spot for musicals. There’s fantasy, melodies, escapism, spectacle, and in many cases, characters which I tend to associate myself with, funnily enough even the depressing stuff isn't quite so bad when you hear it so professionally sung. Andy Reiss and David Fawcett rightly lead the team of four since Beyond the Barricade is their baby, inspired by the performances they were doing together in the rec

"Il-Gagga"

Regretfully I can’t remember the local blog which I came across yesterday afternoon, since reading as much blogs as possible has become a weird obsession of mine in the last months. Well one of these local blogs was promoting the activities, which were being organised at St. James Cavalier which coincided with the celebration of World Book Day. One of the events was for this evening and a quick glance at the mobile made me realize that I was still in time to make it there. At 21.00 they were showing the film Il-Gagga and I have been telling myself to go and watch it since it was launched last march but at that time I was in Gozo, but anyhow to cut the story short I went to watch it and it is not so over-hyped as I thought but I do believe that it deserves to be promoted more and I look forward to buy it on DVD when it will be available from studio seven. This movie shows that the Maltese do have the talent to produce a quality movie worthy of the attention of true movie-lovers. Rather

The Rocky Horror Show in Malta

M asquerade are doing it again, doing another bold event, they are going to stage the world’s favourite O’Brian’s Rocky Horror show at the MMCC in Ta’Qali. I happened to come across the movie one night when I couldn’t catch any sleep and I was kind of intrigued, so when I saw a poster, I tried to allure my partner, whom she is a keen fan of musicals to make her belief that it would be a big miss, if she doesn’t buy a couple of tickets for one of the performances. Preferably, yesterday’s performance, the perfect day since I was on leave and we have other nice things to do during this weekend. Even if the very important etiquette instruction kit for such a non conventional musical were not given to everyone who purchased the tickets (in fact ours was a photocopied version given to my partner by her friend) I ended up going to it not prepared, in fact I went wearing smart pants and a jacket(the mafia boss if anyone had to ask what character I was representing)(Again showing how ignorant I
